A couple of lovely downtempo tracks from Catching Flies and Purple Fleece.
Catching Flies (George King) returns with Opals from his new album out in June. What’s a surprise is that it will be his debut album. He’s been appearing here for over 5 years. As for this new track, Opals, it’s as fragile and beautiful as usual. There’s a bit of the Nils Frahm that permeates su much of downtempo music at the moment in the simple structures on offer and the use of space. Catching Flies says “I borrowed a Wurtlizer (70s Electric Piano) and just spent a few days improvising on it and recording everything into a tape machine. This was one of the first ideas that fell out.” And therein is the difference. This doesn’t rely on pianos to lead. The softness of the cords lends the track a lovely haziness so characteristic of Catching Flies’ best work. And make no mistake, this is one of his best.

Next, Purple Fleece’s second release is Midnight. The Colorado-based producer explores a range of styles including grimy bass music. But thankfully there’s none of that here. Simply the clattering, chiming downtempo track of Midnight. Less the witching hours than a sort of pause to the day, between days. A moment of contemplation. A little background vocal to remind you of the humanity and to add a richness to the otherwise digital and machine music on offer. A beautiful tune to go with a late night tot of something or someone you fancy. Snuggle down.
