#IDM for Friday with Estebahn and Pleaxure

Let’s sidle into the weekend with some awkwardness from Estebahn and Pleaxure.

Estebahn is from Geneva Switzerland and the track is Launch Loop. It’s taken from the Rhuba compilation that I featured yesterday. But it’s a very different proposition. This is angular passive aggressive stuff. There’s a range of bass sounds that spin off into all sorts of places. There’s a bass growl to remind you not to pet the kitty. The beats are somewhere between drum and bass and IDM and have a lot of Squarepusher about them. This is confident that you will submit to its quirkiness and charm.

Next from Baltimore, USA comes Pleaxure (aka Grant Wheeler). The track is Microdots. This has a sense of time with an almost 80s set of synth stabs to open the track. But close on behind comes a tumble of beats in a seemingly chaotic pattern.

It’s a winning combination. There’s enough warmth from the synths to offset the rather cold feeling of the hyper beats. But also enough to make this have a psychedelic and slightly disorientating feel.

Of the track, Pleaxure says, “Microdots as a track always seemed so visual to me right from the start. It received its name as soon as I wrote the underlying dot-like theme on the synth, as I imagined each note to be one microdot of LSD inside a giant jar of microdots. Inside each one of those dots is seemingly an unfathomable amount of potential energy. It starts off so chill, but I imagined cracking open just one dot and letting loose this programming with crazy momentum like some sort of explosive chemical reaction.”

Welcome to the trip. It’s time for your medication now.
