Keeping the weekend chilled with: Francesco Milloni, and Mugen Rad #Chill #IDM #Downtempo

After a long and tough week I’m keeping things chilled and low key with Francesco Milloni, and Mugen Rad.

Francesco Milloni is an Italian electronic producer, based in Bologna. There’s a strong classical element to his work which is hardly surprising when he admits that, “A half-grand piano was a powerful presence within his home.” He delivers a mixture between synthesizers and classical instruments.

Featured track A New Home is his new single. He says it, “tells a story about space colonization at the other end of the universe, on a new planet that you can call home.” Musically, it has a slightly cinematic vision but not so much that the tune is second to the vision. It offers a downbeat piano line that mixes with the slow thud and throb of bass. Beats are a wood block tumble.

The track pulses with possibilities and cleverly pitches between optimism and despondency. That tension keeps the track alive and interesting.

Mugen Rad is from Pretoria, South Africa. His biog offers the slightly unconventional, “You may be asking yourself, “Why did Mugen start making music and watching anime?” Well, the answer is simple. Some time back, I watched Samurai Champloo for the first time and instantly fell in love with the story as well as the soundtrack crafted by Nujabes, Fat Jon, and Tsutchie.”

Here’s new single Somber Dreams (an American spelling of Sombre, I guess). This is a lovely lo-fi hip hop late night jazz track. Everything is low key. Beats are solid but kept low and back in the mix. The foreground is a jazzy tickle of sad electric piano that carries the track. Around are various background calls and electronic bits that stop this being a simple affair. Instead, it’s a story of the deepest night and melancholia.
