Spiraling electronic memories with: Robert Byrne – Baltimore, Cork #ProgressiveHouse #Electronica #Folktronica #Psychedelia

No, not Ireland but Southern England

Places and times are reflected in memories and then by artists in their work. Here’s Robert Byrne, originally from Dublin but now resident in Philadelphia with a track about another part of Ireland.

The track is Baltimore, Cork. This is a village in the southernmost parish in Ireland. It’s also the first track from Robert’s forthcoming album. It’s one of those slightly unclassifiable tracks. A bit prog house, a bit techno in places, a bit downtempo, a bit psychedelic folktronica. There’s a blend of The Chemical Brothers’ My Private Psychedelic Reel about some of it and Amorphous Androgynous in other places.

It’s only 04:34 but has an unhurried sense. Electronica sounds gradually spiral out into whorls and climaxes. There’s acid burbling away giving it that disorientating psychedelic edge. Beats have an almost downtempo pace but a punch that belies that description and gives shades of techno. It chimes and whirrs like a mechanical behemoth. There are fragments of wordless vocal that add a folktronica tinge.

A tune in which to lose yourself and find pleasures and memories of days gone by.
