Summer chill with Dokkodo Sounds, and WH!TENOIZ

A couple of summer chill essentials from Dokkodo Sounds, and WH!TENOIZ.

Dokkodo Sounds is electronic producer, Thomas Trueman, based in Leeds, UK. The name comes from a book, The Dokkōdō (The Way of Walking Alone), (Japanese: 獨行道) which was written by one of the greatest swordsmen in 1645 Japan, Miyamoto Musashi. It consists of 21 precepts. Dokkōdō was largely composed on the occasion of Musashi giving away his possessions in preparation for death, and was dedicated to his favourite disciple, Terao Magonojō.

Dokkodo was last here a year ago. Then I said “There’s a lot of Lemon Jelly here.” and that’s also true for his new one I Knew The Years Would Move Quickly (out on Stereofox). But that also means it’s rather lovely.

I Knew The Years Would Move Quickly opens with beats that gently but solidly thud away. Melody comes from a mix of acoustic guitar and associated keyboards. The mood is sunny and terribly languid. Everything is a bit hazy. Life is thankfully peaceful and just a tad out of focus. This is simply asking you to sit down for a nice cup of elevenses and a biscuit of your choice. Mine’s a coffee and a chocolate hobnob.

Next, WH!TENOIZ whose name sounds as though we’re in for an aural assault. Not so. This is a German lofi study beats experience on new track Feeling Good.

Opening with chiming guitar this waits a little bit to bring the lofi beats in. Beats squelch their lofi way and electronics are kept minimal allowing the guitar to shine and carry the weight of the track.

This may be short but it packs a lovely gentle emotional punch. Hardly surprising then that WH!TENOIZ says that it’s “transporting you to a moment of shared memories and cherished connections.”
