Chilling in the rain with: BaoBao, and Jakliu

After what feels like a couple of months some proper rain today. Time to hunker down with some soft damp chill from BaoBao, and Jakliu.

BaoBao returns after a few months with new track Fireflies.

Fireflies is more skilfully produced slow atmospheric lofi chill. Beats are no more than handclaps. And the melody no more than a few guitar and piano chords.

But it comes together so effortlessly. There’s a seamless merging of sounds that makes a whole greater than the sum of its parts. There’s a late night wistful feel here that tugs at the emotions.

So rich, so deep, so beautiful.

Next, Jakliu. From Dublin, Ireland he too takes an emotional path on new track Not For Long, But I Know.

Not For Long, But I Know is an interesting track. It’s all terribly chilled but doesn’t follow the usual chill conventions.

It’s built around repeating keyboard chords with beats pushed far into the background. Structurally this owes more to melodic techno but with the beats turned down and the melody left front and centre. And instead of a peak there’s a mid-track pause. This is clever stuff but without being clever for clever’s sake.

Techno to chill to and a heart of tender wonder.
