Pulsating downtempo from: Luko – Giant Walking (feat. Outlions)

I’m awfully tired today. Too much end of life care. Need something that chills but engages. Here’s Luko with new single Giant Walking (feat. Outlions) to deliver on that template.

Luko is a Canadian artist with influences from people like Bonobo (no surprise) and Medasin (who they?). Luko has been making music for the past few years and here’s the beautifully developed new single Giant Walking. It’s been developed with Vancouver artist Outlions.

The track opens with bird song and twinkling synths like 90s The Orb. But sidesteps that comparison with a rich dark bass line that casually dominates the rest of the track. There’s then a bit of wood block percussion and low glow synths.

There’s a lovely organic feel here. Something of a cross between a steamy jungle and a dark northern woodland. The track lopes its way across the landscape. There’s not quite a riff at work here. And not even quite a groove.

Shouldn’t really work for me without some sort of hook, which it resolutely refuses to provide. But the pulse of the bass and the sheer inventiveness at work carries the day. Properly classy downtempo.
