Drum and bass with: Sandtone – Mesoscale

I’ve been enjoying the Amol Rajan ‘we need jungle’ viral remix meme, albeit Jungle was never my thing. But I do like a bit of light drum and bass. So here’s a classy example care of Sandtone.

Sandtone is a Salt Lake City-based artist with a 12-year background in music production. He has “an academic foundation in Earth science and a love for southern Utah’s geology.” Here’s new track Mesoscale.

Mesoscale means intermediate between micro and macro. But there’s nothing middling about this track. It piles on the dreamy with more than half an eye for an evil bass line.

It opens with typical hi ht jitters but also reaches for the ethereal with the wordless vocal elements. Just when that seems to run its course the rug is pulled out from under by through the addition of ‘that’ bass line. Deep, rich, dark and full of treacly menace. A little funk bass adds a nice twist and allows Mesoscale to stand out from the crowd.
