50/Fifty Coming Up: #34 and #33

You couldn’t get a more different set of artists than today’s pair – Adamski and U2.

At #34, Adamski (Adam Tinley – more here). There’s a range of tracks that I could have chosen. But, for some reason, the track that I’ve kept coming back to is not his big hit Killer but NRG (1990). D says Adamski has better tunes. However, what makes it count is the jacking beat and my clear weakness for house piano. That, and the sense of abandon, inventiveness and endless possibility of electronic music.

Best bit: when the piano comes in at 1.16.

At #33, rock gods U2 and their 1992 track Even Better Than The Real Thing which they let Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne remix (as Perfecto). This showed anyone could have a dance remix. And, if you had the right remixer, you could crossover. This is a brilliantly wonderful big room tune with thumping beats and lyrics to singalong to. Oakenfold would go on to more lucrative but worse things but for this he deserves all the credit.

Meanwhile, D in her understated way says “If you’re going to include a remixed U2 track then I’d prefer this – U2 – Lemon (Perfecto Mix) -and it’s about as close as I’ll ever get to a trance tune without wanting to throw myself under a truck.”

Best bit: where it starts the ‘take me higher’ lines at 4.35

And, for completeness, here’s D’s choice (do love the Bono falsetto)

which got converted into this:

  1. This showed anyone could have a dance remix – but he left in discernable bits of the Irish Band, so it cannot be any good. Sorry Ctel but it’s still U fucking 2

  2. Nope
