REcovered: The Aloof – Wish You Were Here

The Aloof’s Wish You Were Here gets a gloom pop cover from Dunproofin. Free download.

The Aloof were this blog’s second post. They were a kind of electorinc super-group in the mid-90s, including members of The Sabres of Paradise and Red Snapper. The vocals were provided by Ricky Barrow. Wish You Were Here was a 1996 single which reached #61 (#43 when re-released) in the UK charts.

The original track is The Aloof at their most melancholy, doing a bit of a Massive Attack. The music is bassy and dark, with all the light and shade resting on Ricky Barrow’s great vocals. That leaves Dunproofin with a tough ask. Plenty of echo helps the vocals along and he wisely ups the music, especially guitars, to make a more rounded, rockier, track than the original.

And here’s The Aloof doing the track live in 1996
