A couple of tracks for Ambient Sunday including one from Ukraine. We have 58918012, and Chalk Portraits.

Returnee 58918012 (aka Yurii Popov) is from Ukraine and produces dark ambient. He says, “Music is one of those few things that makes me truly calm and happy. Sometimes it’s coming from outside, sometimes from the inside, but it’s always my feelings. There’s nothing more to say.” I hope he’s ok.

The featured track is 606649 taken from the album Different Colors. The tune manages to have an analogue warmth to it. Perhaps that comes from the use of tape recordings. There’s a deep hissing loveliness at play. It’s a mix of almost wood blocks with deep chords and chimes. The effect is the slow rhythmic breathing of a machine. Quite mechanically beautiful.

Also returning is Chalk Portraits (aka Greg Kennelty from Metal Injection). We have Moment from a three-track EP of the same name.

Moment is bright and delicate. It comes in the wake of 2021’s Memory album. Greg says, “I wanted to revisit that sound with all the arpeggiators and the washy pads, but apply some of the things I discovered while writing Welcome Home.”

What you get is a six minute background wash of sounds that lap and wave whilst gentle synths pick out an uncertain wandering melody that invites you to follow. It’s a walk on the beach. The sideways scuttle of the crab and a set of unknown footprints.

The revisiting of Memory may not have delivered the In Retrospect project intended but it does deliver this lovely piece. It almost goes for neo-classical but happily stays this side of the electronic line. An experience in chilled bliss. Total relaxation.
